Volunteering

Feeling inspired to make a meaningful contribution to your community? Become a volunteer at Mercy House! We are always looking for individuals to assist with a variety of different programs.

After-School Tutoring

College students and other individuals wishing to tutor children can contact us to sign up for the After-School Tutoring Program.  Children come to tutoring Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm.  Tutoring requires a regular commitment by the volunteer to come on a set schedule.

Positions fill up fast and are space limited. If you are interested in volunteering in our after school program, You will need to provide 2 letters of reference and schedule and orientation with Sara, our Childcare Coordinator. We ask that you have previous experience working with children.

Community Dinners

Mercy House holds community dinners for residents once a month on the 3rd Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Dinners are normally hosted by groups from the community. An average of 75 people come to our dinner. This is a time for families to enjoy a meal together and get to know others who are experiencing similar circumstances of homelessness.  Volunteers are asked to provide a well-rounded meal that adheres to the Food Guide Pyramid. Please call Laura @ 540 432-1812 to schedule a dinner at Mercy House.

Community Service

Individuals needing to complete court-ordered community service for non-violent offenses may contact Sam to schedule orientation. Workers may be asked to answer phones, file and complete office tasks, clean offices and apartments, mow the grass or shovel snow or work with the maintenance department on repairs. We are unable to place community service workers with any history of violence or sexual assault.
